Bill Armstrong at The Photographers' Gallery in London
Meet The Artist: Artist Talk with Bill Armstrong
Before his lecture with W.M. Hunt, join the New York-based artist at 5:30 pm on Friday, April 24th for a glass of prosecco to discover more about his extensive body of work, the Infinity series (1997 - present). Armstrong re-photographs found images with his camera lens set at infinity then transforms the prints through an extensive process of manipulation: photocopying, cutting and painting. The resulting re-photographed works employ visual perception to question reality and illusion. Armstrong is represented by HackelBury Fine Art, London.
Thinking in Colour: A Conversation with Bill Armstrong & W.M. Hunt
Join Bill Armstrong and W.M. Hunt at 6:30 pm on Friday, April 24th for a conversation on color photography. Taking inspiration from the book I Send You This Cadmium Red, which features correspondence between critic John Berger and artist John Christie, Hunt and Armstrong have initiated a dialogue about colour in photography.
Starting with Armstrong’s thoughts on the use of colour harmony, as well as Hunt’s observations about the history of colour and its empathic power, these long-time friends challenge each other and take the audience on an unexpected and fresh journey through interpreting colour in photographs.
Seeing in Colour: Workshop with Bill Armstrong
Join Bill Armstrong on Saturday, April 25th (10:30 am- 5:30 pm) for an inspiring day of color theory and practical tips for photographers.
Many photographers shoot without knowing the secrets of colour that painters, designers and graphic artists use to make compelling images. This workshop will give an introduction to the principles of colour. Covering such topics as: the contrast and harmony of colour, the psychology and symbolism of colour, colour and mood, and ironic use of colour. We will see how the masters of colour (Steve McCurry, Alex Webb, Martin Parr, Annie Leibovitz, Nan Goldin, Todd Hido, Gary Fabian Miller and many others) use colour for specific purposes to maximise the impact of their images. The workshop will also cover colour temperature, including time of day and mixed lighting. The course will include lectures, slide shows, exercises and class discussion.
